3. Cole Holcomb leads the Redskins in tackles

Holcomb has slowly but surely created momentum in the linebacker battle. His work habits have been noticed by Gruden and he also had a nice preseason debut where he showed off his athletic ability and solid tackling technique.

Now, the only question for Holcomb is, can he do it again?

Holcomb is a roster lock, so he isn’t battling for a roster spot. But, if he can showcase enough potential as a three-down option, he will have a chance to prove himself as a potential starter. He could end up taking over for a more run-oriented player like Jonathan Bostic, especially if he can prove to be just as solid a tackler as the veteran.

That’s why Holcomb’s tackling production will be important to watch as the preseason goes along. He has the technique and athleticism needed to make an impact in that area. And if he can continue to do that, it should go a long way towards earning him a chance for a big role. Whether or not that’s a backup job or an eventual starter role, his biggest chance to prove himself comes now.

Holcomb will be ready to take advantage of this opportunity and should have a shot at leading the team in tackle. If things fall similarly to the first preseason game, five or six should do the trick, but perhaps Holcomb could notch seven.
