The Washington Redskins reportedly aren’t considering offensive tackle Trent Williams despite his holdout from the team.

Trent Williams won’t report to the Redskins. The Redskins won’t trade Trent Williams.

We officially have a stalemate.

Over the course of the past couple of months, Williams has been holding out from the Redskins amid issues with the medical staff or a desire for a new deal, depending on who you listen to. Williams has vowed never to play for Washington again, but that hasn’t stopped the team from holding out hope that he will.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Redskins have been adamant that they won’t trade Williams this offseason. Schefter tweeted out the news on Monday night.

Given the Redskins’ less-than-desirable situation at the left tackle position, the desire to keep Williams is somewhat sensible. However, if he is, in fact, hell-bent on never playing another down for the team, then they are eventually going to have to consider trading him.

Still, the team can hold out as long as possible if they truly think there’s a chance that Williams might return to the squad. But if he’s not going to suit up for the season opener, they should absolutely trade him before that point.

Williams could potential fetch a package similar to that of Duane Brown, who was traded to the Seahawks along with a fifth-round pick in exchange for second and fourth-round selections. The Redskins may be able to get a bit more for Williams because he is better, but his injury issues in recent seasons could defray his value a bit. Nabbing a couple of Day 2 picks would be a massive win for the team.

Without Williams, the Redskins will likely have to start either Geron Christian or Donald Penn at tackle. Penn should win that battle, he is a veteran and Christian has performed poorly in his limited NFL action, but we’ll learn more about that in the second preseason game.

For now, the Williams situation is fluid. But hopefully, it will reach its conclusion at some point in the near future.
