Redskins: Studs and duds from the team’s Preseason Week 1 loss to the Browns
Dud: LB Shaun Dion Hamilton
It seems a bit unfair to call Hamilton a dud in this contest. He was only on the field for a brief time. However, that brief time allowed some of the concerns about him to come to a head.
Hamilton is known as a smart, instinctual player at the linebacker position. He doesn’t have the best athletic ability, but his mental processing is supposed to help him make up for that. That wasn’t necessarily the case versus the Browns.
Hamilton only saw limited action early, but on the first drive, he missed a tackle that he could have made. Additionally, he and his projected partner, Jon Bostic, had a tough time guarding the middle of the field. The Browns were able to rip off massive chunks of yardage over the middle of the field as a result, and it brought back bad memories of the Redskins’ deficiencies in this area last season.
To make matters worse, Hamilton’s night prematurely ended after he suffered a chest injury. It’s unclear the extent of the injury, and his absence may have been precautionary. But given that he dealt with injuries at Alabama, this is a negative for him.
Hamilton, if healthy, should have a chance to step up moving forward. He is looking likely to start and all it will take is one better game to prove that he should get a chance. But after seeing some hype about him as the team’s top linebacker, this performance was a bit disappointing.
