The Washington Redskins made quite a few moves on their offensive line Wednesday morning. One of them was waiving second-year center Casey Dunn.

On Wednesday morning, the Washington Redskins offensive line shake-up continued. Throughout the offseason, the team has made flurries of moves on the offensive line. And today was no different.

The Redskins officially announced the signing of Donald Penn as their first move of the day. Reports had leaked on Tuesday that Penn was flying back to Richmond to sign a one-year deal with the ‘Skins and will provide depth during Trent Williams‘ holdout. In the corresponding move to adding Penn, the team parted ways with Tyler Catalina, a third-year offensive lineman who had been on and off the roster over the course of the past few seasons.

However, the team wasn’t done. They also signed former Colts offensive guard, Hugh Thornton, to a deal after they worked him out on Tuesday. Thornton hasn’t played an NFL snap since 2015, but he is still just 28 and is finally healthy after dealing with ankle injuries. He will provide depth on the interior line.

To add Thornton, the ‘Skins had to make one more move. And it did come on the offensive line. They waived second-year center Casey Dunn with an injury designation.

Dunn was considered to be a dark-horse to make the Redskins roster last year. Undrafted out of Auburn, Dunn first got onto the Redskins roster after a tryout with the squad. The one-year starter in the SEC demonstrated great technique at center and just needed to bulk up to face NFL-level competition.

Despite making the 53-man roster, Dunn wasn’t entrusted with playing time after the Redskins suffered a plethora of offensive line injuries. In fact, he was waived and stashed on the practice squad, as the team deemed that he wasn’t ready for playing time. Still, there was hope that he could develop into a top backup with a year of NFL seasoning under his belt.

The release of Dunn likely means that he was behind Tony Bergstrom, who has been the team’s backup center for almost two years now, and fifth-round rookie Ross Pierschbacher in the Redskins’ center room. And since the team is only likely to keep two interior backups, that was enough to push Dunn off the roster, especially with guys like Ereck Flowers, Thornton, and Bergstrom fighting for what could be one spot.

Dunn may get scooped up by another team looking for a developmental center. Or, he could land on a practice squad once the season begins. Washington should keep in touch with Dunn in case they deal with any issues at center. He has decent potential and while he doesn’t quite fit with the team now, keeping him on a short-list of interior backups would be a smart move.
