The Washington Redskins have signed linebacker Myles Humphrey to the 90-man roster to provide depth.

The Washington Redskins made a signing early on Friday morning. No, it’s not Donald Penn, the offensive tackle that the team reportedly worked out and got many fans excited. Instead, it’s a depth player who should help out in the edge rusher and linebacker room during camp.

The player that the Redskins ended up signing was Myles Humphrey. He’s a linebacker who will likely play on the edge in the team’s 3-4 alignment and serve as roster depth.

Humphrey (6-2, 245 pounds) played his college football at Shepherd and was a star there. In his final season with the team in 2017, he logged 13 sacks — the fourth-best mark among Division II players — and was named the Mountain East Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year.

Over the course of his career at Shepherd, Humphrey was a consistent threat as a pass rusher and logged an even 40 sacks during his four seasons playing for the team. He will have to showcase the ability to play at the NFL level, but that sort of production is certainly solid. That will at least give him the hope to become a rotational edge rusher if he can flash during training camp.

That said, Humphrey comes with some drawbacks. He lacks the strength and size needed to hold up against stronger, NFL-caliber offensive linemen. He has good athletic ability, but if he can’t get stronger and set the edge a bit more, his chances of becoming a rotational contributor will be limited.

In all likelihood, Humphrey was added to provide depth on the edge during camp. The ‘Skins are a bit thin at that position right now with seventh-round rookie Jordan Brailford starting camp on the PUP list. So, Humphrey will have a chance to prove himself while Brailford is out. But, Humphrey may not be long for the roster if Brailford returns and the team decides to add some extra help on the offensive line.

In the best-case scenario for Humphrey, he will have a chance to stay on the 90-man roster and make a case for a practice squad spot. But for the time being, it seems that the Redskins are just shuffling another camp body onto their roster to even out their depth at various positions.
