Washington Redskins Training Camp Profile: RT Morgan Moses
Morgan Moses was identified as a core Redskin, demonstrated by his contract extension in 2017. He must regain form in 2019 for the Redskins offense to be effective. The future of newly drafted QB Dwayne Haskins could depend on it.
Washington Redskins right tackle Morgan Moses has been a pleasant surprise after being selected by the Redskins in the third round of 2014 NFL draft. In the past four years, he has played next to two-time Pro Bowl RG Brandon Scherff, mostly stabilizing the right side of the offensive line in a tough NFC East. During the 2019 season, Moses must regain form after struggling primarily with penalties and nagging injuries in 2018.
In 2018, the ageless Adrian Peterson was able to rush for 1042 yards and seven Touchdowns. One of the primary reasons for Peterson’s success was the work of Morgan Moses, along with LT Trent Williams and C Chase Roullier. Moses and Roullier were the only Week 1 starters on the line to start all 16 games. Offensive line coach Bill Callahan and assistant offensive line coach Phil Rauscher also did a tremendous job throughout the year, considering the low quality of linemen picked up during the year due to injuries to starters Scherff, Williams, Shawn Lauvao, and others.
Moses cannot commit the number of penalties he did last year. In fact, he led the league in accepted penalties for offensive linemen with a whopping 14. Of those penalties, the breakdown was as follows: Seven false starts, six holding penalties, and one unsportsmanlike conduct. In addition, he had two more offensive holding penalties declined. For perspective, the next-highest penalized player on the Redskins offensive line was Trent Williams, with eight accepted penalties. The team’s offense was not good enough to overcome these penalties as injuries piled up.
While Moses struggled with penalties in 2018, he has been a workhorse throughout his Redskins career, despite many nagging injuries to his ankles and knees. He has started all 16 games the past four seasons dating back to 2015. He was given a five-year contract extension in 2017 making him the second highest paid right tackle in the NFL at the time. This contract extension demonstrated the team’s commitment to him as a core Redskin.
2019 will need to be a season where Moses must continue to be a leader and core player for the Redskins. His focus has to be on committing less penalties and taking care of his body. His nagging injuries arguably affected his play during the 2018 season with loss of mobility. Morgan Moses is a mountain of man, and his presence along the offensive line will be vital for the Redskins offense to be effective. If rookie Dwayne Haskins is called upon to start during the season, the newly-drafted future franchise quarterback will need his best players up front to perform well, in order to achieve any type of success.
