The Washington Redskins have gotten better at team-building in recent seasons. However, they have had some big free-agent mistakes as well.

In recent seasons, the Washington Redskins have done a really good job of adding talent to their roster. While the team is still in a building or rebuilding phase, they have been able to draft well for the past couple of years and they also have brought some quality free agents into the fold.

Of course, the team has still made their fair share of mistakes. Frankly, it’s hard not to in free agency. Sometimes, teams have to pony up and pay to add talent to their team. And Washington certainly has a history of overpaying for older players.

It’s not hard to find free-agent mistakes for the Redskins in the past two decades. A prime example would be the $100 million contract they gave Albert Haynesworth. In the past five years, the team has been a bit better about avoiding grossly overpaying for talent, but in the process, they have signed some rough contracts for mid-tier players.

Additionally, they have let some of their own, home-grown talent walk. In some circumstances, that is fine, but getting compensatory picks isn’t always worth letting a top talent walk, especially if there could be more to be had on the trade market.

With that said, here’s a look at the Redskins’ biggest free-agent mistakes in each of the past five years. This includes players that they signed to contracts and players that they let walk. Let’s dive in, starting in 2015.
