Doug Williams had an additional year tacked onto his contract by the Washington Redskins.

This flew somewhat under the radar in the last 24 hours, but it appears that Doug Williams has agreed to a one-year extension with the Washington Redskins.

Williams is currently serving as the Redskins’ Senior vice president of player personnel. Over the course of the past few seasons, he has been instrumental in helping add talent to the team in the past few drafted classes.

Craig Hoffman and Chris Russell of 106.7 The Fan were first to report Williams’ extension, and they classified the extension as “standard” among NFL front offices.

More from Riggo's Rag

"Williams received a planned extension called a “rollover,” which simply keeps the current contract in place for an extra year. This is standard in front offices across the league as a front office member is entering the final year of his/her contract. Williams signed a three-year contract on June 13, 2017 when he was elevated to his current role. The rollover year now extends that contract through 2021. If all goes well, the same will happen again for Williams a year from now, unless he decides to hold out for a new deal or positional promotion."

No matter how you look at it, this is good news for the ‘Skins. They seemingly have a very strong scouting staff, headlined by Williams and Kyle Smith, and if they can keep continuity there, the team should continue to have a chance to build the roster and potentially turn them into a contender. Sure, it will take some time before that happens, but keeping Williams on board through 2021 should at least give them a chance to continue drafting successfully.

If Williams continues to find success in the Redskins front office, he will likely demand a raise at some point. But extending him for another year means that he will be involved in at least the next two draft classes. And that should be a big positive for Washington.
