Redskins Position Battle: Left guard looks like a two-man race
Backups
Tony Bergstrom, Ross Pierschbacher and Tyler Catalina will be three names you here once training camp and preseasons game start as they will be vying for a roster spot. The three guys can play multiple positions which are good for a team that has dealt with a lot of injuries.
Starting with Tony Bergstrom, he has been with the Redskins for a couple of years now in a backup role and has played guard and center. Bergstrom, 33 in August, doesn’t have a lot of upside for the team other than someone who has NFL game experience and can serve as a backup along multiple positions.
Ross Pierschbacher might have the best chance to quietly compete for a starting role coming into his rookie season as he can play guard or center. An under-the-radar fifth-round pick, Pierschbacher is a four-year starter from the University of Alabama. During his time in school, he started in more games than any Alabama player in school history and was an All-American in his senior year.
Tyler Catalina missed all of last season with a shoulder injury but the third-year pro is back and looking to compete for a roster spot. Catalina will have his work cut out for him but look for him to compete for a backup role as he can play guard and the tackle position.
While all of these players will have a chance to make the team, it still seems that they may be behind in any battle to earn the starting left guard job.
