As a cornerstone of their franchise edges out the door, the Redskins are on defcon five, and a recent development further complicates the matter.

Yesterday, it was revealed that Washington Redskins veteran left tackle Trent Williams had requested a trade from the Redskins, if he was not awarded a new contract more aligned with the current offensive tackle market.

Now, there’s more news on the Williams front, but it is unrelated to Williams’ contract, which still has two years remaining at an average annual value of around $13 million. The latest report is not centered on Williams’ contract, but rather his disposition with the team itself. Per Jason La Canfora, Williams is not quibbling with Washington over financials. Instead, as La Canfora’s report states, Williams is fed up with the medical staff, and the handling of his recent medical situation, and he is set on either a trade or a release.

As is the case with any report, the assertion of La Canfora must be taken with a grain of salt. But if it is true, then the argument to cut ties with Williams, either via trade or release, grows more potent. Williams, for all his dominant talent, is an aging tackle who is rumored to be at odds with Washington’s staff. In the end, it could be best for both parties if a separation occurs.

Even if his contract isn’t the central focus of the conflict, it still looms large; Williams’ contract, as he nears the age of 31, is depleting in value, and it could thin out potential trade partners, if teams either don’t have the cap, or don’t want to tie up too much money in a depreciating asset. The Redskins’ potential value gained in a trade might be stymied by this factor, and in any separation, they take on over $5 million in dead cap, unless a compromise can be met with a partner.
