After rookie minicamp, the Washington Redskins have taken the next steps needed to solidify their roster. They added five players and cut three to help round out their 90-man unit.

Every year, teams bring in a bevy of undrafted rookies and younger NFL veterans to test them out during the offseason. With rosters currently maxed out at 90 men, NFL teams have a lot more opportunities to evaluate players and so, throughout the 2019 offseason, they will cycle through many back-end roster candidates in hopes of finding a diamond in the rough.

That’s what the Redskins are doing right now. After their team’s rookie minicamp, they have continued to shape their roster. They signed five players and cut three from their current roster in order to take a look at the new players.

According to the team’s official Twitter account, these are the acquisitions that the ‘Skins made on Monday afternoon.

The only semi-surprise on this list is the fact that the team decided to cut Joshua Holsey. Once regarded as a potential option at the nickel position, Holsey missed the start of last season with a freak foot injury and was stashed on the practice squad before his return. The Redskins are armed with a number of talented players at who can play nickel including Greg Stroman, Danny Johnson, and rookie seventh-round pick Jimmy Moreland, so Holsey would have had a tough time finding a role.

As for Hansbrough and Joseph, both were back-end roster candidates. At most, they were fighting for spots on the practice squad, but as NFL veterans, they weren’t likely to get them.

Of the undrafted free agents they signed, one of the most intriguing comes from North Dakota, defensive back Deion Harris. He has a 6-3 frame and had nine interceptions during his collegiate career and had 35 passes defended in the last three seasons. He has the size needed to make an impact, and the ‘Skins are lacking size at corner. So, Harris could have a chance to stick around as a back-end developmental guy or a practice squad option.

Elsewhere, Jerald Foster has a solid 6-3, 310-pound frame and could provide competition at guard. At the very least, he can challenge the depth they have at the position.

The other three players signed, Bonner, Maloata, and Reynolds, will have a tougher path to the roster, as they play at some of the ‘Skins’ strongest positions. They could challenge for practice squad spots, but they’re more likely to be camp bodies.
