The Washington Redskins selected Jimmy Moreland in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Here’s a look at Moreland’s skill set.

The Redskins have once again addressed their defense. Though they have focused more heavily on the offensive side of the ball in this draft, they picked up a quality defensive back on Day 3. And that’s James Madison’s Jimmy Moreland.

Moreland, a 2018 AP All-American from Division II, has a lot of upside for the next level. The 5-10 playmaker had 14 interceptions over the course of the past three seasons. He could emerge as a playmaker in the slot.

Our own Ian Cummings actually mocked Moreland to the Redskins in his re-done Day 3 mock. Here’s what he said about Moreland in that piece.

More from Riggo's Rag

"If the right player winds up being available at the right pick, then the Redskins could address a position that doesn’t look like a need on paper: Cornerback. Josh Norman, Quinton Dunbar, and Fabian Moreau appear to have the confidence of the team as starters, but Washington could still sign depth and potential future starting talent. That’s what they get here with Jimmy Moreland, an uber-productive Division II prospect with tremendous competitive fire, ball skills, and spryness as a mover."

As Ian pointed out, the ‘Skins could use some corner depth. Though the team has Greg Stroman and Danny Johnson in the slot, the team still needed to add some depth to the position. And at the worst, Moreland is a practice squad player with immense upside and excellent movement skills. But he could end up emerging as a solid slot man and if he, Stroman, and Johnson can hold the fort there, Moreau could shift outside to replace Norman in the near future.

In the seventh round, all you want to do is land a player that might make the 53-man roster. Moreland would qualify. He has solid tape, performed well in draft season, and could provide young depth at one of the team’s biggest weaknesses. The ‘Skins deserve some praise for being able to get Moreland at this point in the draft.
