Brace yourselves. Draft day is here.

The 2019 NFL draft day is upon us, as fans and first-round hopefuls descend on downtown Nashville TN. The underwear Olympics and pre-draft meetings are concluded, the rumors have swirled and within the next 24 hours teams phones will be ringing and the smoke will begin to clear as teams jockey for precious draft capital to enhance their clubs chances to sway the competitive balance in their favor.

No doubt there will be winners and losers, not to mention scores of Monday morning quarterbacks, en masse, reliving the right, wrong and ugly from this weekend’s festivities. No matter what each team has a stake in making the draft must-see reality television. As all fans/teams are aware ratings are the cash cow that continues to drive new and more lucrative contracts for everyone involved.

All hail the power of the Almighty dollar!

The most visible questions that will get answered this weekend include:

1. Will the Cardinals abruptly end their not so secretive love affair with Kyler Murray, a quarterback whose size would indicate he’s better suited for baseball than the pounding he will undoubtedly receive by defenses in the NFL?

2. Which of this year’s quarterback class will rise and fall, not just tomorrow but as their careers unfold?

3. Who will take a page out of the late Al Davis’ playbook and draft workout warrior D.K. Metcalf way too early?

4. Will Bill Belichick once again prove he’s two steps ahead of every other team in the NFL?

5. Can John Elway really flop again on yet another quarterback choice? It’s inconceivable to think, yet somehow probable.

And finally…

Will the Washington Redskins continue their recent years draft trend of remaining patient and disciplined in allowing the draft to take shape around them and pick the best player on the board?

I’d like to think so but with #firebruceallen on board, I wouldn’t bet on it. They seem mildly desperate to add a quarterback from this very weak class, which is nonsensical considering when they were 6-3 midyear and in first place, it wasn’t due to superb quarterback play. Alex Smith was actually very pedestrian compared to the success he had achieved in recent years. In addition, and after much contemplation, Josh Rosen is not the guy either. Let some other GM make that mistake. In interviews, Rosen sounds like everything that’s wrong with Aaron Rodgers and possesses none of the elite skills that makes him worth dealing with.

What the Redskins shouldn’t do? Reach. Point, period, the end. There’s no receiver, cornerback or quarterback worth a slot between 1-15. And although draft history tells us three quarterbacks will be off the board when the Redskins pick comes around, they shouldn’t fall victim to taking someone just to say they did.

What the Redskins should do? Unless, T.J. Hockenson, an elite edge or stud hog-molly is on the board, trade back, gain extra picks. This year, next, or both. They have plenty of needs and falling back seven to ten spots won’t preclude them from adding a talented piece, potentially with a better fit/value ratio.

So buckle up, state your case and prepare to be amazed, with more than one team executing some dumbfounded move that after the fact will be highly criticized.
