2019 NFL Mock Draft 8.0: Redskins land top quarterback, Raiders make surprise pick
Armed with two first-round picks and having addressed their biggest defensive needs in free agency, the Packers can afford to take the best player available with this pick. And that might be Rashan Gary here.
Gary was a former five-star recruit to Michigan. While he never quite lived up to that billing, he has excellent athletic ability, a solid 6-4 frame, and positional versatility. That should secure him a spot in the first round, though he could slip to the back-end of the first round because of his lack of production and concerns about his shoulder.
Still, the Packers could use help on the defensive line. They added a couple of edge guys, including Preston Smith, in free agency, but they could use an inside/outside threat for their 3-4 defense. Gary could provide them that and with his ceiling, the Packers could be tempted to take him. They can grab him here and focus on finding offensive help with their second first-round selection.
Other Packers Draft Options
OL Jonah Williams, Alabama. The Packers could use help at guard, despite overpaying for Billy Turner, and Williams could play there before eventually kicking outside to tackle as he develops.
EDGE Montez Sweat, Mississippi State. The Packers just signed two edge rushers in free agency, but they could continue to add talent at the position, especially if they medically clear Sweat and view him as a top-10 player in this draft.
LB Devin Bush, Michigan. The Packers need some help at linebacker, and Gary’s college teammate would make sense for them at this juncture.
