The Washington Redskins made their selection with the No. 15 pick. It was Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins.

The Washington Redskins have made their choice. They have a new quarterback. Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins will be the team’s quarterback of the future after a mini-draft day fall to the 15th pick. And Redskins fans are likely excited.

Haskins was thought by many to be one of the better quarterbacks in this draft class. He has a great arm and is very accurate and can throw the ball deep. He should be able to turn into an NFL starter, and there’s a chance that he could be a very good quarterback.

There are still some areas that Haskins will have to work on. His ball placement was slightly off, so he’ll need to improve that if he wants to avoid misfiring at the NFL level. Additionally, Haskins isn’t very mobile, so he will have to operate well within the pocket. Considering that he still has to learn how to read the field, he may have some growing pains at the NFL level.

Still, getting Haskins is a solid move for the Redskins. They were desperate for some help at the quarterback position, and they particularly needed young talent. Case Keenum, Colt McCoy, and Alex Smith are all over the age of 30, so adding Haskins, who doesn’t turn 22 until May, will give them long-term upside.

Hopefully, the Redskins will be able to help Haskins develop. He will have a chance to fight for a starting position right away, but he also won’t need to right away if he isn’t ready. McCoy and Keenum can hold the fort for a little bit if needed. He will get a chance to prove himself in the offseason and if he can show growth, the Redskins will be happy with their investment. And he could turn into their franchise quarterback.

The better part of this pick is that the Redskins ended up staying put and still landing Haskins. Given that there had been talks about moving up into the top five for the Redskins to get him, landing him at 15 is a fine value. Now, they will just have to upgrade the offense around Haskins at the receiver position and at left guard. They can focus on that during Day 2 of the 2019 NFL Draft.

While some may have liked to see the ‘Skins go in a different direction and take an edge rusher, Haskins fills what was, arguably, the biggest need for the team. We’ll soon see what Jay Gruden can do with Haskins as his starter.
