Pick No. 73 – Alabama S Deionte Thompson

The Redskins are able to solve their other safety position by snagging the sliding Deionte Thompson in the third round. Other prospects with more experience have gained traction throughout the draft process. Safeties like Johnathan Abrams, Taylor Rapp, Juan Thornhill, Nasir Adderley, Darnell Savage, and others all go before Thompson. It didn’t help that Thompson had wrist surgery before the combine and was unable to participate. Despite his fall, Thompson is able to find a home among his former Alabama teammates in this mock.

Thompson showed himself to have great range in college, and proved to be one of the best center fielders in this draft. He has great length and loose hips at the safety position, which will help him in coverage. He also showed the willingness to come up and lay the wood, though he may want to put on a few pounds at the next level.

Thompson played well at the beginning of the season last year, but his play seemed to drop off a bit as the season continued. Some scouts think he has the skill set without having the instincts. think it’s more of his lack of experience. He was exposed once teams were able to trick him with new concepts. He may not be ready to be the quarterback of a defense, but he doesn’t have to be with Collins at his side. They could make an explosive safety combination.
