The smoke surrounding a Redskins potential quarterback addition in the 2019 NFL Draft keeps getting thicker.

The Washington Redskins‘ quarterback woes unexpectedly continued in devastating fashion last year, starting when Alex Smith suffered a season-ending, and potentially career-ending, injury against the Houston Texans.

After Smith left the fold, the Redskins carried on with long-time backup Colt McCoy for a short time. It wasn’t long before McCoy himself suffered a similar injury to Smith’s. The Redskins finished the remainder of the season with Mark Sanchez and Josh Johnson, while McCoy healed, sitting out the latter half.

It was at first theorized that McCoy would be healthy by season’s end, but that assumption has been proven to be very incorrect. Last month, it was reported that Colt McCoy had undergone a second surgery on his leg, and now, per J.P. Finlay of NBC Sports Mid-Atlantic, McCoy had yet another procedure on his leg, his third of the offseason.

This newly reported surgical procedure clouds McCoy’s recovery timeline. It was originally thought that the Texas product would be cleared by the start of offseason workouts, but one week has passed since the start of workouts, and Case Keenum is the only quarterback in Redskins park aside from newly-acquired AAF product Josh Woodrum.

McCoy has been a fixture with the Redskins for just over half a decade, providing solid depth as an experienced, competent backup quarterback. But with this injury slowing his timeline, in an offseason where the Redskins have already traded for a stopgap, and may draft a first-round signal caller in the 2019 NFL Draft, McCoy might be losing his luster in the front office.

For now, McCoy is still on the road to recovery, and later this week, we’ll get to see if another quarterback will be placed on the path to the season before McCoy ultimately reaches that point. One thing is certain; McCoy’s status is not certain, and without his trademark certainty, the Redskins are dangerously thin at the sport’s most important position. Decisions of impulse may follow.
