Doug Williams held a pre-draft press conference to discuss the Redskins’ draft plans. One of the most interesting things he spoke about was that the team is more likely to trade down than trade up.

The Redskins are facing some critical decisions ahead of the 2019 NFL Draft. And on Monday, general manager Doug Williams held a press conference to discuss some of the choices that Washington would soon be faced with.

In a wide-ranging interview, Williams addressed questions about the draft including what positions are their biggest needs, what they are looking for in a receiver, and whether or not they would consider a quarterback in the first round.

However, one of the most intriguing things that Williams brought up was the possibility of a Redskins trade. Per Redskins insider Lake Lewis Jr., Williams stated that the team’s chances of trading up are slimmer than the team’s chances of trading back.

This is notable as over the course of the past week or so, the possibility of the Redskins trading up has been discussed at length. And it seems that if they are to target a quarterback like Dwayne Haskins, they would have to move up to get him. But, for the moment, Williams’ comments would put a damper on the expectation that the team would move up for Haskins.

The reason for this could be twofold. First of all, the ‘Skins may actually expect that Haskins could be on the board with the 15th pick. If they believe that, then there would be little reason to trade up unless another suitor emerged via trade. The other possibility is that the Redskins could have interest in a different quarterback, like Daniel Jones, who seems more likely to be on the board at 15. If that’s the case, they may be comfortable waiting.

Another option is that the team isn’t really considering a first-round quarterback. If that’s the case, then they would have no reason to move up, and trading down could be even more sensible. They could pick up extra draft capital while still targeting a great defensive player on the edge or a falling candidate to play left guard. If they trade down, it will become clearer that they have their eyes on a Day 2 quarterback.

No matter what, Williams’ comments are notable, but should be taken with a grain of salt. As he said, they can’t predict exactly how the board will shake out, but it seems that Williams has a solid plan of attack. We’ll soon see what the ‘Skins end up doing in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
