Redskins reportedly visited with Alabama linebacker Mack Wilson
The Washington Redskins have visited with another Alabama player ahead of the 2019 NFL Draft. It was potential first-round linebacker, Mack Wilson.
The Redskins have had a strong connection to the Alabama football program over the course of the past few years. In fact, as many as six Alabama players could be starters on the team’s defense this year, and they may add even more during the draft.
That said, there are only a handful of Alabama players that could make sense for the ‘Skins this year. So, the connection hasn’t quite been as strong. That is, until recently, when the Redskins reportedly visited with an Alabama player.
According to Pro Football Talk, the Redskins are one of the teams that has met with Alabama linebacker Mack Wilson. Wilson was once considered to be a potential first-round linebacker in this draft class, but he seems more likely to go on Day 2 now. Wilson is a solid player with very good coverage skills, and he could be a three-down linebacker at the NFL level.

The Redskins’ interest in Wilson does make sense. Until recently, the team was unsure of the fate of linebacker Reuben Foster. Foster was facing a potential suspension stemming from domestic violence accusations, but he was cleared and won’t face a suspension. If he was out, the team could have looked to add depth at linebacker and potential long-term starter next to Foster. But now, they seem likely to rely on Shaun Dion Hamilton and Mason Foster to fill that role.
Still, if Wilson ends up on the board with the 46th pick, he may be one of the better players on the board. the Redskins could consider adding him as a result, and that may be doing due diligence on Wilson in case that is possible. After all, Wilson has the potential to be a great three-down starter, so he would be an upgrade next to Reuben Foster. It’s just a question of whether or not the team would 1) address other bigger needs and 2) give Hamilton a chance to prove himself as a starter.
As is the case with most draft visits, this one is duly noted. Wilson would solidify the team’s Alabama connection and could improve the defense, so meeting with him definitely made sense. But it seems likely that the team will focus on filling other needs and will only target Wilson if he truly is the best value on the board.
