Rumors: Redskins ‘not actively chasing’ Josh Rosen, more interested in college QBs
The Washington Redskins have been tied to almost every available quarterback this offseason. However, reports have now surfaced that they are “not actively chasing” Josh Rosen.
The Josh Rosen sweepstakes, or lack thereof, has dominated the NFL since the Arizona Cardinals hired Kliff Kingsbury. Since Kingsbury came to Arizona, it has seemed like the team is going to move on from Rosen and draft Kyler Murray first overall in the 2019 NFL Draft.
However, the team that Rosen might be going to has been a big-time discussion, and the Redskins have recently been implicated as the top landing spot. This makes sense given that the team’s quarterback situation is unsettled, and they are definitely considering adding a young successor to replace the injured Alex Smith.
That said, there are conflicting reports about the Redskins’ interest and most recently, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo said that the Redskins are “not actively chasing” Rosen and that Rosen may not be traded before the draft. Chris Wesseling delivered this news on Twitter.

This is an interesting development, as it really seemed like the Redskins were heavily favored to land Rosen. They still might, but this at least puts a damper on those talks for now, and a team like the Patriots, Chargers, or Giants could swoop in and trade for him if things stall between the ‘Skins and the Cardinals.
Additionally, this is notable because of the amount of interest that Washington is showing in quarterbacks in the upcoming draft. If the Cardinals are, indeed, willing to wait until after the draft to trade Rosen, they could put the Redskins in a difficult spot. They need a young quarterback with upside more than more teams, so they will definitely be taking a passer at some point in the draft. It’s just a matter of whether or not that’s early.
If the Redskins can’t get Rosen, they may end up taking an early-round quarterback. They could even try to get one in the first round, and of the first-round options, Duke’s Daniel Jones seems like the top one that would be available. While I happen to like Jones’ skill set more than most, drafting him 15th would represent a risk and it would make it difficult for the team to address their other big needs like edge rusher, wide receiver, left guard, and safety.
It’s fine if Washington doesn’t end up getting Rosen. But if they target an early-round quarterback instead of trading for Rosen, that could have a negative impact on the team’s draft strategy. They should either try to trade a Day 2 pick for Rosen or target a guy like Will Grier or Brett Rypien in the third round.
