Redskins: 2019 NFL Draft top 20 wide receiver big board
I think Parris Campbell could go a lot higher than most expect. He should be viewed as a Round 2 prospect, but there is a possibility that he could go at the end of Round 1. He has the elite athletic ability that teams look for in prospects, so that could cause him to rise.
Frankly, Campbell wasn’t used optimally at Ohio State. He was used as a gadget player and dump-off type guy too frequently. Campbell did run vertical concepts a lot as well, but the team tended not to send him downfield as much. They tended to send Terry McLaurin and other options down the field more. As a result of this, Campbell isn’t a well-versed route runner, so he will have to work on that at the next level, though he can absolutely gain separation with his speed.
That said, Campbell is a great vertical threat and he made some big-time plays against top-caliber competition. And when he’s in space, he’s borderline unstoppable. He is a slippery player and can avoid tacklers very easily with his elusiveness and speed. This will give him a chance to be excellent after the catch, so teams may find this quality intriguing.
Campbell also showed a good understanding of how to attack zone defenses. He constantly settled into the soft spot in zones and made some really nice catches. He has some of the best hands in the draft and should be able to catch almost everything that is thrown to him.
The Redskins should absolutely have interest in Campbell if he somehow makes it to their Round 2 pick. He has dynamic playmaking ability, something that the offense is lacking, and he would provide insurance if Richardson can’t stay healthy. And if Richardson is healthy, the team would have two deep-threat wideouts that will make it hard to matchup with them.
Campbell also can work a bit as a running back, as he can take jet sweeps out of the backfield, make people miss, and gain extra yards. If he gets consistent touches at the next level, he will be a more than solid receiving weapon.
