Why the Redskins should try to trade Jordan Reed to the Patriots

Jordan Reed is one of the Washington Redskins better offensive weapons, but it may behoove the team to move him. The New England Patriots could be a logical trade partner.

Jordan Reed, although an intriguing talent hasn’t shown the ability to stay on the field long enough to live up to the hoopla surrounding his natural ability. When healthy, he can stretch the field well and move the chains at times. But, he has largely been a disappointment to fans and possibly coaching staff as well.

Any time a player with his talent sits more than they stand, no one is impressed. Ask Colt McCoy. Ask Alex Smith. The best ability in the NFL is durability.

This is the perfect time for the Redskins to move on from Reed. Last year, Reed played in 13 games, the most he has played since suiting up for 14 in 2015. Surely the Redskins could make one front office believe he’s capable of staying healthy. And it just so happens that there is one team with a gaping hole at the tight end position.

The sudden retirement of Rob Gronkowski leads me to entertain the Patriots as a potential landing spot. They’re a team that relishes reclamation projects. With Coach Belichick’s ability to maximize his players, this deal could actually represent winning situation for Reed and both franchises. The Patriots would add a top-notch playmaker. Meanwhile, the Redskins would remove a problematic contract and an underperforming player. And Reed gets a much-needed change of scenery.

New England has a glaring need at tight end and has lost multiple other playmakers this offseason. I know it’s wishful thinking, but after being spurned by Jared Cook, who seems content to sign with the Saints, could there be a tiny bit of desperation on the Patriots part? Maybe. But that may be wishful thinking.

It’s hardly conceivable the Redskins have the capacity to pull the wool over the Patriots eyes. They’ve made a living taking advantage of other NFL franchises. Also, Bruce Allen has a long history of getting played by other general managers.

Ultimately, I largely view this move as improbable, as Reed’s contract likely isn’t in the comfort zone of a Bill Belichick project. He prefers shopping at a bargain-bin level and then turning them into big-money signees.

Whether or not this remains realistic, one thing is still clear. The Redskins should trade Jordan Reed. It’s just a matter of whether or not they can.
