Haskins is unlikely to fall to the 15th pick

There have been some that are hoping for Haskins to slip in the draft and fall in the Redskins’ lap. That certainly would be excellent news for the team, but it is highly unlikely to happen.

Depending on who you talk to, Haskins is usually listed as one of the top two quarterbacks in the 2019 NFL Draft. While some may prefer Drew Lock or Daniel Jones to him, which would push Haskins down the board, it’s unlikely that he would make it to the 15th pick.

In recent seasons, first-round quarterbacks have tended to rise in the lead-up to the draft as opposed to falling. Take the 2017 NFL Draft class, for example. Though the class was widely regarded as a “weaker draft” at the position, much like this year’s class, three passers still went in the top 12 picks. They were the only first-round quarterbacks picked that year.

In fact, in the last five drafts, there have been 16 quarterbacks taken in the first round of the NFL Draft. Only four of them fell outside of the top-12 picks. For those that are curious, the four in that category were Johnny Manziel, Teddy BridgewaterPaxton Lynch, and Lamar Jackson. So, while certain top quarterback prospects have slipped in the past, it doesn’t happen often.

In a class that is starved for talent in general, a slip for Haskins just doesn’t seem likely. He may be viewed as a somewhat raw prospect due to the fact that he only started for one season, but his accuracy and arm talent are certainly encouraging enough to make him a coveted prospect.

Plus, there is recent precedent for a team to take a one-year starter at quarterback with their top pick. The Chicago Bears did this when they took Mitchell Trubisky second overall in 2017. Given that Haskins is probably a better prospect than Trubisky, he should have a chance to go similarly high in the 2019 NFL Draft. So, in order for the Redskins to have any shot at him, they’ll have to trade up for him.
