Redskins 7-Round Mock Draft: Re-examining what happens if the team takes a quarterback early
The Redskins double-dipping at receiver is well within the realm of possibility. In this case, they end up scooping someone who can help them out in the slot.
Jamison Crowder is now on the New York Jets. So, the Redskins will need to replace him there. Last year’s Mr. Irrelevant, Trey Quinn, will probably get a chance to do something there. However, bringing in competition for him and depth, given that Quinn was injured for most of last season, makes sense.
Enter Hunter Renfrow. The Clemson star projects to be a very good slot man in the NFL. Though he’s undersized (5-10, 180 pounds) he has excellent hands and rarely ever drops anything thrown his way. In a word, he is reliable.
During his four-year career at Clemson, Renfrow caught 1,86 passes for 2,133 yards and 15 touchdowns. He consistently caught passes that were thrown his way and has soft hands. Additionally, he consistently showcased an ability to beat NFL-ready defenses and had four touchdowns in his matchups against the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Renfrow isn’t overly athletic, but he did time a 6.8 in the 3-cone drill at the combine. That means his change of direction is good, and he will have a chance to earn separation via his route running.
At this point in the draft, Renfrow is a safe pick. He could start in the slot or be a sure-handed backup. He will try hard, catch everything that comes his way, and do just enough to earn separation. By pairing him with McLaurin, the Redskins could have two future receiving weapons on their hands.
