The Redskins are still looking to find help on the offensive line. Acquiring Ereck Flowers and moving him to guard is an interesting idea, but the team definitely needs to add more talent and competition to ensure their line doesn’t become a problem once again.

Late in the third round, Connor McGovern is a fantastic pickup. McGovern was a really good guard at Penn State and has emerged as one of the better interior prospects in this draft. He could be an immediate starter at left guard and would have a chance to serve as the team’s backup center if needed also.

McGovern (6-5, 308 pounds) is a very good run blocker who should be able to succeed in that role right away. NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein compared McGovern to the newest Tennessee Titans starting guard, Rodger Saffold, and said the following of his ability.

Related Story. Why signing Ereck Flowers is a solid move. light

"Reliable run blocker with NFL-ready size and strength but exploitable holes in his pass sets that need to be addressed as quickly as possible. His starting experience at both center and guard could bring additional interest in McGovern, who would be a bigger, stronger option at center for teams facing odd-front power in their division. He is a good fit in gap and inside-zone run schemes, but his tendency to over-set in pass protection could be challenging to correct. He’s an early starter as a Day 2 pick, but Year 1 could have ups and downs."

The potential ups and downs are why the McGovern slides to the end of Day 2 in this simulation, but he would be plenty solid enough to get by. And besides, it’s not like he’d be worse than what the ‘Skins had on their interior offensive line at the end of last season. Grabbing him here makes a lot of sense.
