The Redskins have a new bonafide safety in Landon Collins, but they’re still in the process of finding his running mate.

With $84 million on his contract, Landon Collins is set in stone at one safety spot. But beside him, the Washington Redskins are still searching for answers. There are potential solutions on the roster. Montae Nicholson could compliment Collins well, if given the chance and the time. But the Redskins haven’t appeared eager to give him the opportunity.

Instead, the Redskins expressed a desire to re-sign veteran safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. The Redskins had traded for Clinton-Dix midway through the 2018 season, giving up a fourth-round pick in the process. Clinton-Dix didn’t perform up to expectations, and when the offseason hit, it was assumed that he would leave.

The Redskins didn’t make it easy, however. They were in negotiations with the Alabama product through the start of free agency. But last night, Clinton-Dix went on a visit to Chicago, weighing other options. And today, it has been confirmed that Clinton-Dix will be suiting up elsewhere in 2019. Per NFL insider Ian Rapoport, he’s signing a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears, the NFC North rivals of his former Packers team.

Some of Clinton-Dix’s team mates in Washington lobbied for the one-time Pro Bowler to stay in D.C., but Clinton-Dix ultimately went to a team geared to compete in 2019. Clinton-Dix’s departure could end up benefiting Washington; to re-sign him would have been to settle for limitations at the safety position. But now there is a more pressing question: Who will take his place?
