30. . Edge Rusher. Kentucky. Josh Allen. 3. player

The Jets would have to make a difficult decision with this pick, as they have a couple of top defensive players still on the board. Josh Allen and Quinnen Williams are both strong options here, and it all depends on whether or not the team wants an edge player or more of an interior threat for Gregg Williams’ defense.

At the end of the day, I ended up going with Allen for the pick. There are a couple of reasons for that.

First of all, Allen is coming off an insanely productive season at Kentucky. He was one of the most improved players in the country and clearly made the right decision in going back to school. Allen logged a whopping 17 sacks on the year and was a force at the line of scrimmage. Allen displayed solid athletic ability and a great understanding of how to win on the edge with a variety of pass rushing moves. He drew praise from many of his opponents, and he was a big part of Kentucky’s rise back to prominence as a football program.

Allen had a decent performance at the combine, as he looked good in the drills and did well on the bench press (28 reps). His 40 time and 3-cone time weren’t as impressive, but he still looks like a top-10 pick on tape.

The other main reason that Allen makes sense for the Jets is because they have more talent on the interior line than they do on the edge. Leonard Williams has been a solid starter as a former first-round pick while guys like Henry Anderson and Nathan Shepard played well on the inside as well. Adding Allen would fix a long-standing issue for the Jets and while Williams would also work, Allen’s upside is too good to pass on.

The Jets also may be in position to trade down with this selection. Considering that the team doesn’t have a second-round pick, they may want to move down an pick up another asset. If a team like the Giants or the Redskins wants to move up for a quarterback, this would be the spot to trade at.
