NFL Mock Draft 4.0: Quarterbacks rise post-combine, Redskins land pass catcher
With Brian Flores in town, the Dolphins are likely going to focus on rebuilding their defense. They don’t have a lot of talent on that side of the ball, and their front seven is particularly weak. But of that group, the edge positions are probably the weakest.
The Dolphins traded for Robert Quinn last offseason, but the returns weren’t great. Quinn logged just 6.5 sacks and the team now may be looking to offload his contract. Meanwhile, Cameron Wake was solid yet again, but he’s a 37-year-old free agent. Keeping him is a possibility, but he will only be a short-term fix at the best.
Because of this, the Dolphins are going to consider adding an edge rusher early in the draft. And Clelin Ferrell seems to be a guy that Flores would like.
Ferrell was a big-time playmaker at Clemson. Though he isn’t particularly athletic, he has a great motor and is a smart player. He has racked up 20 sacks in the past two seasons combined as a part of Clemson’s great defensive front. For the next level, he is somewhat reminiscent of Ryan Kerrigan. A smart, strong, gritty edge rusher with just enough athletic ability to find success.
Ferrell would be a double-digit sack threat in Miami and at the very least, he would provide a quality starter on the defensive side of the ball. He would start an important injection of youth and talent that Flores will desperately need to help the Dolphins defense to improve.
