Adrian Peterson proved to be a solid starter last season for the Washington Redskins. Reportedly, they may look to re-sign him as early as this week.

There have been many calling on the Redskins to re-sign Adrian Peterson after he had a solid season as a fill-in for the injured second-round pick, Derrius Guice. In his first season as a Redskin, Peterson tallied over 1,000 yards and helped carry the team to victory early in the season. He did slow down as the season went along, but that was to be expected of the then 33-year-old running back.

Peterson outperformed expectations, but despite his performance, it was unclear whether or not the team would be able to bring him back. Peterson would likely serve as a backup with Washington following the return of Guice, so there were questions about whether or not he would embrace that role. That said, given the success he had in Washington, he may not want to leave.

Now, according to The MMQB’s Albert Breer, it seems possible that Peterson could re-sign with the Redskins very soon and ahead of free agency. Here’s what Breer said about that in a recent piece.

"I wouldn’t rule out Adrian Peterson re-signing with the Redskins as soon as this week. A couple of teams have shown preliminary interest in the veteran who turns 34 later this month, which is what could push things along and get Jay Gruden and company some insurance for the returning Derrius Guice early in the offseason."

This would be a sensible move for both sides. The Redskins would like to keep Peterson, but they won’t want to give significant money to a 34-year-old backup. In all likelihood, they would offer him a raise from last season, but it seems that a fair value would be a $2 million deal. Perhaps the team would have to overpay a bit to keep him off the free agent market, but they could also opt to give him a two-year deal if they wanted to avoid overpaying him.

Meanwhile, for Peterson, signing now would give him a chance to guarantee a roster spot for 2019. Last offseason, Peterson sat on the free agent market until the preseason. If he doesn’t want to wait around again, taking a solid deal on the table would make sense. And given that he had success in Washington, he may want to stick around.

Of course, if there are actually several teams interested in his service, it may help Peterson to wait and see what his value might be on the free agent market. It’s possible that a team could be interested in giving him a starting job, so that may motivate him not to accept an offer before free agency.

It will be interesting to see if Peterson and the Redskins can agree to a deal. It would be a mutually beneficial move, provided that the ‘Skins don’t overpay for Peterson. But having him on board as a top backup and mentor to Guice would be ideal, so we’ll see if they can keep Peterson from hitting the free agent market.
