Report: Redskins interested in Missouri quarterback Drew Lock
It’s no secret that the Washington Redskins need a quarterback. Reportedly, the team has interest in Missouri quarterback Drew Lock.
Since Alex Smith‘s unfortunate injury against the Houston Texans last year, the Redskins have had a question at the quarterback position. Smith is unlikely to play in 2019, but his $20 million cap hit will still be on the books. That is going to make it difficult for the ‘Skins to find a quality replacement quarterback, as they’ll have to find one cheap.
For that reason, Washington has been scouting quarterbacks heavily ahead of the 2019 NFL Draft. They have demonstrated an interest in the position in pre-draft All-Star games, and that has carried over to the NFL Combine. They have had interest in many passers, but one is starting to stand out.
According to WalterFootball.com’s Charlie Campbell, the Redskins have interest in Missouri quarterback Drew Lock, among others.

"Lock has a lot of attributes that fit Jay Gruden and his offense. He has good size, a powerful arm and athleticism with the ability to use his feet to make plays. The Redskins also like Lock’s intelligence, as he is a smart quarterback despite a revolving door at offensive coordinator during his collegiate career. Washington likes the swagger and confidence that Lock possesses and believes that he has leadership potential. The Redskins may have to move up to make sure they get a quarterback. With two third-round picks, they have some extra ammunition to trade. According to sources, the Redskins like all four of the top quarterbacks with Murray, Haskins, Jones, and Lock all being in play. While some of the other quarterbacks may go earlier, Lock has garnered interest from the Redskins, and he is in play for Washington’s first selection."
These traits, including the strong arm and leadership potential, are certainly intriguing. Lock was a full-time starter at Missouri for three seasons. He’s coming off arguably his best season, completing about 63 percent of his passes for 3,498 yards, 28 touchdowns, and just eight interceptions.
The reason that the Redskins’ interest in Lock matters so much is that he may be on the board with the 15th pick. Kyler Murray and Dwayne Haskins appear to be on the rise in the lead-up to the draft while Daniel Jones also has some fans, including the Redskins. Lock has done well for himself, but he just hasn’t generated quite as much buzz as the other prospects.
While Campbell acknowledged that the ‘Skins may consider trading up for a quarterback, Lock could be a player that they could target and stay put for. That would give them a chance to continue to add talent at other positions on Day 2, as they wouldn’t have to sacrifice assets in a trade up.
Of course, there would still be some concerns with taking a first-round quarterback in a weaker draft class. That said, the Redskins need to bring in some competition for Colt McCoy, and if they aren’t comfortable with any of the mid-round options in this draft, they may have to pull the trigger on an early quarterback.
If Washington does target an early-round quarterback, Lock would certainly be an option. He has the arm strength and arm talent needed to have an impact at the next level. If he can continue to improve his accuracy and mechanics, he could become a franchise guy. It remains to be seen whether or not the ‘Skins will target him, but the interest is noted.
