The Washington Redskins will be tied to a lot of quarterbacks this offseason. In Mel Kiper’s latest mock draft, he has the Redskins going with Drew Lock in the first round.
It’s no secret that the Redskins need some help at quarterback. With Alex Smith out for the season, the team has been doing their due diligence on passers in the lead-up to the draft. It seems inevitable that they will select one and it’s not a question of if they will select one. It’s about when.
There are some who are advocating for the ‘Skins to select a quarterback in the first round. The 2019 NFL Draft isn’t great at the quarterback position, so this may seem like an unlikely scenario. However, the entire draft itself is a weaker class and lacks top-end talent. So, the quarterbacks could offer some teams, like the Redskins, hope that they can’t pass up on.
In a recent mock draft, ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. had Washington selecting a quarterback in the first round. The man was Missouri’s Drew Lock. Here’s what Kiper had to say about Lock in that mock.

"[Lock] was the best quarterback at the Senior Bowl, and he might have the most arm talent of any passer in this class. Now, he’s inconsistent. He misses throws and needs a lot of work on his footwork. He put some bad performances on tape in 2018, though he finished the season strongly. You can see on that tape, though, why a team could fall in love and take the 6-4, 228-pound Lock early."
Lock does have the talent needed to potentially develop into a franchise quarterback. His skill set is similar to that of Jay Cutler, though Lock’s attitude and leadership style are much more desirable than that of Cutler. Both have big arms and can make huge plays. It’s just about whether or not they can be accurate enough to avoid turnover troubles at the NFL level.
Picking Lock at 15 wouldn’t be a bad move for the ‘Skins, depending on how the board falls. He could become a true franchise quarterback for them. However, it would probably be better for the team to look at improving their supporting cast before getting a quarterback. This is especially true since the 2020 NFL Draft class looks to be very strong at QB.
Grabbing a guy like Montez Sweat or Jachai Polite on the edge, Jonah Williams at guard, or a receiver like D.K. Metcalf would make more sense in the Redskins’ attempts to upgrade their roster. Still, Lock can’t be discounted as he could end up being a fine replacement for Smith.
