Redskins 7-Round Mock Draft: Mid-February, pre-Combine edition
It’s no secret that the Redskins need some help on the offensive line. They need a starter at left guard, tackle depth, and a backup center. Erik McCoy could check off both the first and the last needs.
McCoy was one of the best centers at Senior Bowl. He has worked himself into the conversation to be the first center off the board, though he will be competing with Garrett Bradbury and Elgton Jenkins for that distinction. In this case, McCoy ended up lasting until the early third round, so we were happy to scoop him up there.
McCoy has a great frame for an interior lineman at 6-4, 315 pounds. He has a wealth of starting experience at Texas A&M, as he has started 38 games in the past three seasons. Most of his starts came at center, but he should have a good chance to play well at the guard position as well.
In terms of his skill set, McCoy has great technique and a strong frame that will allow him to block well at the next level. He’s a better run blocker than pass blocker at the moment, but he has a lot of room for growth in the former department. His arms are a bit short (33 inches) but on the interior line, that should be less of a problem. He can make up for that with good movement skills.
For the Redskins, McCoy could either take over at left guard or push Chase Roullier to that position while taking over at center. Either way, he would challenge for a starting job early in his career. And considering that McCoy won’t turn 22 until August, he has a lot of upside. Getting him as a third-round pick could end up being a steal for the Redskins.
