The Washington Redskins are in need of a new quarterbacks coach. They are interviewing former NFL quarterback and current Lousiana Tech coach, Tim Rattay, for the position.

One of the lone vacancies that appear to be available on the Redskins current coaching staff comes at quarterbacks coach. With the elevation of Kevin O’Connell to offensive coordinator, the team needs to add a QB coach. They have already interviewed Ken Zampese and Bill Lazor for the position, but they are looking into another candidate on Thursday.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Redskins are meeting with Louisiana Tech QB coach Tim Rattay to discuss the job. Rattay has been a member of the Louisiana Tech staff since 2013 and has seven years of playing experience in the NFL. He would be an interesting addition for the team.

Rattay was originally a seventh-round pick by the 49ers out of Louisiana Tech and put together a decent NFL career. Over the course of seven seasons, he served mostly as a backup player for the 49ers and the Buccaneers. He had a couple of seasons where he was the primary starter, but he didn’t last in that role due to injuries and ineffectiveness. Still, he finished his career with decent numbers for a backup and has been coaching for the better part of the last decade.

At Louisiana Tech, Rattay has done a solid job and was part of the staff that helped turn Jeff Driskel into a sixth-round draft pick after a failed stint at Florida. He has been a solid part of that program and considering that the team has done well despite not being a major power, Rattay does come with solid credentials.

Additionally, it should be noted that Rattay is connected to Jon Gruden. Rattay was a member of Gruden’s Bucs in 2006 and functioned as a solid backup for the team. Gruden interviewed Rattay last season for a spot on his coaching staff but ultimately went in a different direction. Perhaps Jay Gruden will fell differently about bringing Rattay on board.

Hiring Rattay would be a solid move. Teams are looking for young offensive-minded talent, and Rattay is just 41 years old. He could end up being a solid QB coach at the next level and at the very least, he would add more youth and upside to the coaching staff. Plus, his NFL experience would pair well with Kevin O’Connell’s and Matt Cavanaugh‘s, and that could really give the team a lot of different ways to approach the quarterbacks that end up on their roster in 2019.

We’ll see if the Redskins end up hiring Rattay. Either way, bringing him in for an interview is a solid move.
