Report: Redskins interviewing Bill Lazor for open QB coach position
With Kevin O’Connell now serving as the Redskins offensive coordinator, the team has an opening for a quarterbacks coach. They reportedly interviewed Bill Lazor for the job recently.
With Matt Cavanaugh and Kevin O’Connell both receiving promotions of sorts for the Redskins, the team now is looking for a new QB coach. O’Connell will be vacating that role after spending the past two seasons in it, and the team is searching for a successor. Recently, they interviewed former Bengals offensive coordinator Ken Zampese for the job. And now, they have interviewed another recent Bengals coordinator in Bill Lazor.
According to The MMQB’s Albert Breer, the Redskins recently interviewed Lazor for the opening. Lazor has been a coach at the NFL level since 2003 and previously had a stint with the Redskins from 2004-2007. He worked under the legendary Joe Gibbs at the time, and the team afforded him his first chance to work as a quarterbacks coach at the NFL level.
More recently, Lazor has held a couple of offensive coordinator jobs, first with the Dolphins and then with the Bengals. With the Dolphins, Lazor led an above-average unit in his inaugural season with the team in 2014. However, after that the team plummeted to being a bottom-tier unit and Lazor was canned.

After rehabilitating his image for a year as the Bengals’ quarterback coach, he took over the team’s offense in 2017 and 2018. However, the Bengals weren’t able to do much. Andy Dalton never quite looked himself in 2017 while the 2018 squad dealt with countless injuries that capsized them on that side of the ball. After Marvin Lewis was fired, Lazor also found himself out of a job.
That said, Lazor is still a good candidate to serve as a quarterbacks coach. He’s only 46, was well-regarded in the lead-up to his offensive coordinator stints, and has experience working with Gibbs. Perhaps a return to Washington could unlock some of the potential he still has. And at the very least, adding Lazor to work with Cavanaugh and O’Connell would be a solid-looking offensive staff. So, bringing him in for an interview is a fine move.
It will be interesting to see if the ‘Skins choose Lazor or Zampese, or if they continue to interview other candidates for the job. Either way, it’s good that the team has talked to some experienced candidates who could add a new voice to the quarterback room.
