The Washington Redskins have a need at the safety position for yet another year. Here’s a look at some of the guys that they could target in free agency to help at the position.

In 2018, it seemed like the Redskins finally had something figured out at the safety position. D.J. Swearinger was performing at a high level and could have made the Pro Bowl. They traded for Ha Ha Clinton-Dix before the trade deadline to add depth to their squad and push Montae Nicholson into a backup role. They finally had depth at talent. But then, things started to unravel.

Swearinger’s outspoken nature became a problem in the locker room. He repeatedly questioned coaches and teammates to the media and after one late-season instance in which he called out Greg Manusky, he was cut. Right or wrong, Swearinger had reportedly been told to knock it off, but he didn’t. Now, he is back playing for the Cardinals.

Meanwhile, Nicholson was arrested and put on the NFI list after punching a man in the face, as captured on video. He didn’t play after that incident. Clinton-Dix had his share of struggles after coming over from the Packers, and he is now hitting free agency. It remains to be seen if he will be re-signed.

No matter how you look at it, the Redskins have a hole at safety. They will need to address it in some way, shape, or form, and they may have a chance to do that in free agency as the free agent class is fairly stacked at the position. Here’s a look at three options that the team should target, including two elite players and one potential unheralded gem.

Note: We’re not including Ha Ha Clinton-Dix among these free agent options, as these are just external possibilities for the team. There’s a chance that Clinton-Dix could return, but we’ll be writing about that at some point in the near future. Stay tuned.
