Bill Callahan has been rumored to want out of Washington. Could the Redskins target Dave DeGuglielmo as their offensive line coach if that happens?

One of the most well-regarded position coaches the Redskins have on their roster is Bill Callahan. The long-time offensive line coach has done a great job of developing offensive linemen during his time in the NFL, and he has been a decent offensive coordinator during his career as well. Callahan has a lot of experience at the NFL level and has spent the last four seasons in Washington. However, that could soon change.

Reportedly, Callahan is one of the coaches that is growing tired of the circus atmosphere surrounding the Redskins. He may be ready for a change and frankly, the ‘Skins may be ready for one as well. The offensive line has been injured at a ridiculous rate in the past two seasons. While that may not be solely Callahan’s responsibility, a change may be in the interest of all parties.

In the event that Callahan leaves, the team will need to find a strong option for their offensive line coach. Thankfully, one just became available in Dave DeGuglielmo.

DeGuglielmo is coming off a successful one-year stint as the offensive line coach for the Colts. He did a great job of turning that unit into one of the best in football and kept Andrew Luck upright consistently for the first time in his career. DeGuglielmo did a great job of developing Mark Glowinski and Braden Smith into quality starters on the right side of the offensive line, and that did a lot to fix the issues that had plagued the team over the course of the past few seasons.

Despite this success, Frank Reich is letting DeGuglielmo go, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. DeGuglielmo was the only offensive hire by Josh McDaniels before he went back to New England, and it seems that Reich wants to fill the position with his own guy. So, DeGuglielmo was let go, though Reich is recommending him to other coaches, per Garafolo.

DeGuglielmo has been an offensive line coach since coming into the NFL in 2004. His lone year off came in 2013. He has done well in developing offensive linemen and has led the teams he has worked with to solid success in the run game. He has the experience needed to make an impact on the offensive line, and his development skills could be just what the Redskins need to take their line to the next level.

If Callahan does leave, DeGuglielmo would be the ideal replacement for him. He could come in and work with young guys like Chase Roullier and Geron Christian to try and help them improve (Roullier into a star at center and Christian into a starter at the very least). The team could also target a new left guard in the draft and see what DeGuglielmo could get out of him.

DuGuglielmo will be a hot name on the open market, but the Redskins should still keep an eye on him. If they need a new offensive line coach, they probably won’t find a better one than him.
