Joe Woods had been tied to the Washington Redskins earlier in the offseason, but now it appears that he is going to be interviewing with the squad. The position he is interviewing for in unknown.

The Redskins’ weird offseason is continuing. With radio silence from the front office on what is happening with the coaching staff, many are just sitting and waiting to see what decisions are being made. As of right now, only Jay Gruden is confirmed to be returning, and until the front office says anything else, the status of every other coaching job is unknown.

That said, the team is apparently attempting to make a move and hire a candidate with defensive coordinator experience. That candidate would be Joe Woods of the Denver Broncos.

According to Mike Klis of 9News, Woods is going to be interviewing with the Redskins at some point in the near future. Here’s what Klis said on Twitter about the situation.

So, Woods is down to choosing two teams, and one of them is Washington. While it’s unclear exactly what position he would be interviewing for, it is widely assumed that it would be the defensive backs coach job.

If Wilks is choosing between Washington and Arizona, it’s not going to be for a coordinator position. The Cardinals hired Vance Joseph as the team’s defensive coordinator, so Woods would be interviewing for the DBs coach role there. This would make sense, as Woods worked under Joseph in Denver. One would then deduce that if Woods is choosing between two teams, he is probably interviewing for the same position. So, Woods must be looking at the potential of becoming the DBs coach in Washington.

Of course, this is awkward for a number of reasons. The first is that Torrian Gray is still, currently, the team’s defensive backs coach. While rumors have circulated about Gray being out, nothing has been confirmed. That said, the fact that the team appears to be actively pursuing a replacement for him is certainly indicative that they are going to move on from Gray this offseason.

Gray had done a fairly solid job as the team’s defensive backs coach and has helped guys like Quinton Dunbar, Kendall Fuller, Fabian Moreau, and even Greg Stroman to develop quickly over the course of the past two seasons. Getting rid of him seems unlikely to have much of a positive impact on the defense. At best, it could be a lateral move, so targeting Woods still seems like a strange move.

Woods does still have some upside, and he was regarded as a potential-packed coordinator when Joseph brought him to Denver. Still, he didn’t do a lot to improve the Broncos’ defense, so that should be a minor red flag. Perhaps getting a new voice in the locker room could help the Redskins, but having that voice come at the expense of Gray seems like a losing proposition.
