Clemson. Christian Wilkins. 8. player. 50. . Defensive Lineman

The Lions have had issues on the interior defensive line since Ndamukong Suh left in free agency all those years ago. They have a great opportunity to upgrade that group with this pick, and Matt Patricia won’t miss an opportunity to do that.

Both Christian Wilkins and Rashan Gary make sense as options with this pick, but after his performance in the College Football Playoff, the edge on my big board goes to Wilkins.

Wilkins has been a big playmaker throughout his entire Clemson career. He has a quick first step and is great at shooting gaps and getting into opposing backfields. In the National Championship game, he consistently wreaked havoc against a solid Alabama offensive line and made life difficult for Tua Tagovailoa and company. That’s exactly what teams will hope that Wilkins can do at the next level.

Wilkins should be a good all-around talent at the next level, provided that he goes to a team that mostly runs 4-3 concepts. He’s an excellent fit in that scheme, as that is not only what Clemson ran, but it allows him to utilize his strengths well. The Lions have that and pairing him long term with Damon Harrison should cause Detroit’s woes on the interior to disappear.
