Andy Reid loves bolstering the trenches on both sides of the ball. And with this pick, he is in perfect position to add a potential contributor.

Allen Bailey’s contract is up at the end of the season for the Chiefs, and it remains unclear whether or not he will return to the team. Bailey is a solid but unspectacular player, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the team add a big-bodied man up front anyway to start over Bailey, even if he re-signs.

Dexter Lawrence would qualify. Yet another member of Clemson’s stellar defensive line, Lawrence checks in at 6-foot-4, 340 pounds. He should be an excellent run defender in the NFL, but he also offers pass rushing ability too.

Though Lawrence had only 10 sacks during his college career (6.5 of which came as a freshman), he has the athletic ability and skill set needed to become a solid pass rusher at the next level. He will have the ability to play the nose tackle position or five-technique in the Chiefs’ defensive alignment, so that will be a positive as well.

The one question with Lawrence is that he failed a drug test that caused him to be out for the two games Clemson had in the College Football Playoff. He should be able to clear up those issues in pre-draft interviews.

Reid will love the idea of adding a massive man to help fix the team’s bottom-barrel run defense in 2019. Lawrence is the best value on the board at this point, so grabbing him now is certainly a sensible move.
