There have been rumblings and rumors of potential staff changes to come in Washington. Now, a report states that the Redskins expressed interest in Broncos defensive coordinator Joe Woods as a defensive backs coach.

There have long been rumors of some sort of change in the Washington Redskins structure. Whether it’s been at defensive coordinator, the position coaches, or even in the front office, many are expecting some sort of change. However, at this point, it remains to be seen what that is. The offseason has plodded along so far with the only confirmation being that Jay Gruden would return as the Redskins head coach. Aside from that, there hasn’t been much news.

However, according to Mike Klis of 9News, the Redskins have expressed interest in a potential coaching assistant. Per Klis, the ‘Skins expressed an interest in current Broncos defensive coordinator Joe Woods to be their defensive backs coach. They are not the only team, as the Jaguars have also expressed interest.

This is an intriguing development for a couple of reasons.

More from Riggo's Rag

The first is that many assumed that the defensive backs coach position wasn’t one that the Redskins would be looking to change. Torrian Gray has been the DBs coach for the past two seasons and he has done a good job working with and developing young talents including Kendall Fuller, Fabian Moreau, Greg Stroman, and Danny Johnson. Sure, they didn’t all perform at very high levels, but they showed growth. And that’s what a position coach is around to do.

This interest in Woods seems to indicate that the Redskins might be looking to move on from Gray, and that would be a curious decision. In fact, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo is reporting that Gray may have been let go, but we’ll wait and see if that ends up being the case.

If the ‘Skins  were to add a new DBs coach, Woods wouldn’t be a bad choice. He has defensive coordinator experience and has a long track record as a defensive backs coach in the NFL (has coaches since 2004).

However, Woods is in a weird situation with the Broncos. Though Vance Joseph has been fired as the head coach in Denver, the Broncos have been holding onto their assistants until they get a new head coach. So, Woods is still under contract there, meaning that he couldn’t move on without permission.

We’ll keep a eye on this development, but it appears that the defensive backs change may be a part of the Washington staffing changes going forward.
