The Washington Redskins continue to baffle many with their roster moves. This time, they elected to waive the recently signed Carlos Henderson and ArDarius Stewart.

Just when it seemed like the Redskins were starting to make some promising personnel decisions early in the 2019 offseason, this happens.

For the past week, Washington has been loading up on players that have signed reserve/future deals. These contracts essentially tie players to a franchise before the next league year officially begins in March, and any player that inks a deal will be on the initial 90-man roster. The players that ink these deals are almost always upside-based players that deserve a chance to compete for a roster spot. And the Redskins had two of those types of players in Carlos Henderson and ArDarius Stewart.

And now, they don’t.

According to NBC Sports Washington’s JP Finlay, the Redskins have waived Henderson and Stewart. It’s unclear why the team made that decision, but it’s a curious one at the very least.

Both Henderson and Stewart were third-round picks in 2017. They have a lot of upside, but they weren’t able to stick on the Broncos and Jets rosters respectively. That said, both players are still very young, and they are the perfect types of guys to land on reserve/future contracts, as they have a legitimate chance of making the 53-man roster. And if not, then they definitely were practice squad candidates at the very least.

At the same time, this isn’t a move that is going to capsize the Redskins season, by any means. As mentioned, both players struggled to make the roster on receiver-needy teams, so perhaps they weren’t the answer. Still signing them only to release them a week later doesn’t seem to make sense either, but maybe there is something going on that we don’t know about.

We’ll keep an eye on the team’s roster moves in the coming days and see if they give any reason that they released this potential-packed duo. For now though, this is a move that just doesn’t make much sense on paper.
