Redskins: Prospects to watch in the College Football Playoff championship game
Early-Round Prospects
EDGE Clelin Ferrell, Clemson. Ferrell is athletic, has a high motor, and has put up 20 sacks in the past two years. I’ve talked at length about Ferrell over the course of the past month and currently have him listed as the team’s top option with their first-round pick.
S Deionte Thompson, Alabama. With the departure of D.J. Swearinger and Ha Ha Clinton Dix’s pending free agency, the Redskins could end up targeting a safety early on in the draft. Thompson is a potential first-round pick whose stock could rise during draft season. He has the makings of an all-around player, and that’s why he is my top Alabama prospect to watch in the postseason.
OT Jonah Williams, Alabama. Williams may seem like an odd potential player to watch, but he’s a potential guard/tackle candidate for the next level. The Redskins have a hole at left guard, and if they decide they like Williams enough, he could be an option at No. 15 overall, especially if they’re convinced that he can take over at left tackle when Trent Williams eventually retires.

LB Tre Lamar, Clemson. Lamar, an all-around linebacker coming off his best season, would be an upgrade over Zach Brown and Mason Foster in the middle of the Washington defense. He could be a good option in the second round if the team doesn’t address the middle linebacker position in free agency.
TE Irv Smith Jr., Alabama. Tight end could be a need for the Redskins if they part with Jordan Reed. Smith really emerged as a dynamic receiving threat this year, totaling 40 catches for 667 yards and seven scores on the year. It’s possible that he will return to Alabama but if he doesn’t, he will be in play in the first couple rounds for the ‘Skins.
LB Mack Wilson, Alabama. Wilson has been excellent in coverage this season which will make him a hot commodity in the NFL. The biggest weakness of the Washington linebacker corps was their inability to cover tight ends and the middle of the field. That’s a major reason that Wilson was one of my top prospects to watch during the SEC Championship in early December.
RB Damien Harris, Alabama. The Redskins may end up needing a backup to Derrius Guice if they can’t re-sign Adrian Peterson. Harris should garner Round 2 consideration and while the ‘Skins are unlikely to spend a high pick on the position, Harris should still be watched.
