The Washington Redskins continue to make moves to start the offseason, and they have added another player on a futures contract. That would be wide receiver Tre McBride.

Now that the 2018 NFL season is over for the Redskins, they are focusing on attempting to rebuild what appears to be a team that is crumbling. The team may have a poisoned leadership structure, and while there are expected to be changes, Bruce Allen seems like he is staying in D.C. And as long as that’s the case, the fans won’t be happy.

Regardless of what the leadership structure is in Washington, the team will still be making roster moves and personnel decisions throughout the offseason. Earlier in the week, they added six players on reserve/future contracts, and they added another one on Wednesday.

According to ESPN’s John Keim, Tre McBride has signed a futures deal with the Redskins. McBride, a wide receiver, will now be on the team’s 90-man roster once the new league year begins in March.

McBride, a William & Mary product, is the third receiver that the Redskins have added on futures deals this week. The other two were former third-round picks Carlos Henderson and ArDarius Stewart. McBride doesn’t have quite as good a pedigree as those two, but he comes with some upside, nonetheless.

McBride was a seventh-round pick by the Titans back in 2015, but he never really caught on with the team. In two seasons, he played in nine games, catching just two passes for eight yards and a touchdown. However, in 2017, McBride saw some action with the Chicago Bears. In limited playing time in eight games, he flashed some big-play ability and caught eight passes for 144 yards. So, there is potential for him to be at least a depth option on a roster.

Of course, it’s also worth noting that McBride was waived by the Bears during the 2017 season. So obviously, they didn’t think he was anything special. And McBride tried to latch on with the Jets following his release there, but he was waived at final cuts in 2018. Following that, he couldn’t get work in the NFL.

Taking a chance on McBride is a fine move by the Redskins. He’s still young, he just turned 26 in December, and he has 17 games of NFL experience. Usually, these reserve/future contract signees are gambles that are used to provide roster depth during the offseason. McBride will at least have a chance to make the team’s roster, considering how weak the ‘Skins are at receiver.

And speaking of that, the fact that the team has identified receiver as a weakness is definitely a positive. They should continue to look for help at the position, and if the signings of McBride, Stewart, and Henderson tell us anything, it should be that there will be changes to the Washington receiving corps in the near future.
