Redskins: A prospect to watch on each team in the College Football Playoff
Suddenly, the Redskins have a massive hole at safety. That has been a problem for the better part of the last decade, since the tragic passing of Sean Taylor, but this year, things were looking a bit better for the position. Now, they’re once again looking bleak.
The Redskins elected to cut D.J. Swearinger after he continually spoke ill of players and coaches to the media. Meanwhile, Montae Nicholson was placed on the NFI list after a video of him punching a man in the face became public. Meanwhile, trade deadline acquisition Ha Ha Clinton-Dix has performed poorly at times and is a pending free agent. Just like that, all the team’s safety depth could be gone in a flash.
If the ‘Skins decide to target safety help in the draft, Deionte Thompson is a player that will garner some interest in the first round, provided that he declares. Thompson has had a great season and has emerged as a big-time playmaker in the Alabama secondary. He could be a strong all-around option, as his 70 tackles, two picks, and five pass defenses demonstrate, and his 6-foot-2 frame and solid athleticism will give him immense upside.
Many fans wanted Washington to take Derwin James last year when he was on the clock in the first round. The team took Daron Payne instead. They shouldn’t pass up on another upper-level safety prospect, so keep an eye on Thompson as he should garner consideration from the team this offseason.
