The Washington Redskins’ injury-plagued season continues. Jordan Reed and Colt McCoy are now on IR. The move surprises nobody.

The end of the 2018 season can’t come soon enough for the Redskins faithful. For yet another year, the team gave the fans hope and then shattered it into a million pieces. The 2019 offseason will be a trying one for all involved, but there is still one week to get through before the offseason begins.

Ahead of the final week for he season, the Redskins know that they are playing for nothing. Their slim playoff chances evaporated last week with their loss against the Titans, so this game is just for pride. There’s no sense in rushing back any of the team’s injured players, and that prompted a couple of roster moves on Thursday.

According to the team’s official Twitter, Colt McCoy and Jordan Reed were placed on IR by the Redskins. This wasn’t a surprise, as both guys have missed the last couple of weeks with injuries that were thought to be season-ending. The only reason they were still on the roster is because they may have had a chance to play if the team made the playoffs. Alas, that didn’t happen and now, they are on IR.

With those two gone, the Redskins were able to fill a couple of open roster spots. They elected to re-sign Marcus Smith to the active roster while promoting Alex Carter from the practice squad. The moves are two that have long-term upside, so they are solid ones.

Smith spent time with the ‘Skins earlier in the year. He worked as a depth player at the edge rush position. The former first-round pick by the Eagles has athletic upside, so keeping him around for the offseason could be interesting. If he ever puts everything together, he could be a rotational pass rushing specialist at the very least. So, adding him now is a solid move for that reason.

Meanwhile, Carter was a third-round pick by the Lions in 2015, but he has bounced around the NFL for the most part. Washington will be his sixth team. That said, Carter is a local kid whose father, Tom, was a first-round pick by the Redskins in 1993.  Carter, a defensive back, has some physicality to his game, and he can be stashed for the offseason and be given a chance to prove himself. He still has upside, and giving him time to work with Torrian Gray could help him to improve. He’s a good buy-low candidate at this point.

With the offseason approaching, these were two very sensible moves. It will be interesting to see what the Redskins end up doing with their roster during the offseason, but adding potential-packed young talent before the end of the season is certainly a smart move.
