Redskins Recap: Late Titans score sinks Washington’s playoff hopes
The Washington Redskins had a tightly contested game against the Tennessee Titans. Unfortunately, they fell off at the end and lost 25-16.
The playoffs are no longer a likelihood for the Redskins. Not that they ever had a great chance, but it did look like the ‘Skins would have a chance to win against the Titans. Unfortunately, a late-game drive by the Titans put the Redskins down and they couldn’t come back. A late Josh Johnson interception sealed the deal and effectively ended the season for the team.
Despite the result, Johnson was really a factor for the Redskins offense. In his second start, he showed excellent poise in the pocket and was cool, calm, and collected throughout the contest. Throughout the game, Johnson hung in the pocket and made difficult throws. He wasn’t always perfectly accurate, but he got the ball downfield.
In addition to this, Johnson’s mobility was a factor on offense. He was able to move around easily and had a nice designed run at one point. As long as the Redskins still employ Johnson as their starter, they should use him on some designed runs and rely on his ability to make throws on the run. It’s clear that he is comfortable doing that, and that’s a nice dimension to have in their offense. The interception hurt, but it was his worst throw of the night. Most of his other throws were solid, at the very least.

Meanwhile. Adrian Peterson helped to carry the load as well. He broke the 1,000-yard mark on the season with a 119-yard outing, and he really helped to bleed the clock throughout the game. He kept the chains moving and did a ton to help the team out. If he keeps running with great strength, balance, and vision, he will continue to help to spark the team’s offense.
On defense, the Redskins played well save for a couple of drives. When the Titans had their play-action game working, they were successful against the Redskins defense, attacking the middle of the field in the passing game and using Derrick Henry to hammer the ball forward. Mason Foster continued to struggle in coverage, and early on, the team’s tackling was poor. That improved as the game went along, but it was still an issue.
Some of the notable defenders including Greg Stroman, who looked good as a tackler on Saturday night, and the defensive line (namely Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne). They put forth solid efforts during the contest and continued to show that the duo would be a strength on the defensive front for years to come.
The Redskins didn’t win. But on the road, they fought hard and led for a majority of the evening. That’s a positive for a team that has dealt with a ton of injuries and was on their fourth quarterback. We’ll see if there’s any chance for the ‘Skins to qualify for the postseason next week. But for now, it looks like it’s time to start preparing for 2019.
