The Washington Redskins had an open roster spot to fill, and they plugged it in by signing wide receiver Darvin Kidsy to the active roster.

In the wake of placing Montae Nicholson on the reserve/NFI list and ending his season, the Redskins had a free roster spot. They were always likely to fill it ahead of Saturday’s game, although it wasn’t a guarantee, as they had carried just 52 on their roster for a game earlier in the year. Seemingly, the team learned from that mistake and didn’t let it happen again.

On Thursday, the Redskins added some receiver depth to the team, per ESPN’s John Keim. The squad signed Darvin Kidsy to the active roster. Kidsy had spent the whole season on the team’s practice squad and the elevation makes sense, as the team could be a bit thin at receiver.

Heading into Saturday’s game against the Titans, Josh Doctson (back) and Maurice Harris (concussion) are both questionable. It seems unlikely that Harris will suit up, and we won’t know more about Doctson’s status until Friday afternoon. That said, the decision to activate Kidsy could indicate that Doctson truly is a coin-flip, so that is certainly something to watch.

More from Riggo's Rag

Kidsy was an undrafted free agent out of Texas Southern who did some nice things for the Redskins in the preseason. While he didn’t do enough to make the active roster, he demonstrated some speed and ability to separate and made some nice catches. He has long-term upside, so getting a quick look at him against the Titans will be a nice opportunity for the team to evaluate him.

Of course, some will point to the fact that the Redskins could have had Simmie Cobbs on the roster for these exact circumstances. The undrafted Indiana product just recently left the team’s practice squad to sign with the Saints, but many have argued that he should have been put on the active roster weeks before that happened. And this would be the opportune time to get a look at him, especially if Doctson is out. But, alas, Cobbs is gone, so that point is moot.

On the bright side, at least the ‘Skins appear to be managing their roster a bit better at this point. Kidsy is young and has some talent, so seeing what he can do as the fourth or fifth receiver will be a nice opportunity. At the very least, he will get to create some more tape and the team can see if he’s worth keeping this offseason.

Kidsy will be a player to watch if he’s active — especially if both Harris and Doctson don’t play. Perhaps he can make some plays and prove that he deserves a 90-man roster spot and another chance to qualify for the roster in 2019.
