The Washington Redskins made another move to their already banged-up offensive line. They placed Austin Howard on Injured Reserve while signing Timon Parris to the active roster.

The offensive line has been a mess this season for the Redskins. They’re already to down to what might amount to their sixth and seventh options at the guard positions on Saturday. And now, they are losing even more depth on their already thin unit.

According to the team’s official Twitter, they have placed Austin Howard on Injured Reserve. Howard, who was waived by the Colts early in the offseason before landing with the Redskins after the injury bug wiped out many of their starters, played in five games with the ‘Skins and made one start. In that start, he struggled badly at guard before ceding snaps to Luke Bowanko.

Frankly speaking, Howard won’t be missed too much. He was an experienced veteran with positional versatility, but he wasn’t playing well. With him now out, the Redskins will get some time to look at the younger options on their roster and see if any are worth keeping.

In Howard’s place, the team added another offensive lineman to the roster. That was Timon Parris. The Stony Brook product signed with the Redskins as an undrafted free agent. The 6-foot-5, 312-pound man was a tackle in college and may get a chance to serve as the fourth option at the position for the ‘Skins for the rest of the year. Or, he could be the swing tackle backup with Ty Nsekhe out on Saturday. They also could give him a shot at guard if they wanted to, provided that he has enough strength to succeed at the position.

Parris has a lot of upside. He is raw, but the fact of the matter is that he has the prototypical size to become a solid NFL player. And at Stony Brook, he was a more than solid player. It will be interesting to see if he can earn any playing time or work his way onto the active roster on game day. Either way, stashing him on the active roster at this point in the season is a good move.

Parris may not play a role for the Redskins this year, but by activating him, they guarantee that they can hold onto him this offseason if they think he’s a good fit or has some future upside. This two-game stretch (at the very least) will be a test for him and he is familiar with the system. Here’s hoping that he can show something if he gets on the field against the Titans.
