Redskins offense vs. Titans defense

Once again, the best way for the Redskins to take advantage of their opponent will be through the air. Once again, that will be difficult for the team to do.

The weakness for the Titans comes in their secondary. Their cornerback play has not been great this season, and they just lost one of their starters, Logan Ryan, for the season because of an injury. They don’t have quality depth at the position, so they may continue to give up a fair amount of yardage and scores through the air.

That said, the Redskins are better served working as a ball-dominant, run-heavy offense. They have Josh Johnson at quarterback and while he did well against the Jaguars, he has struggled to be consistent during his NFL career. Johnson will need to rely on Jamison Crowder and Josh Doctson to find space. And if they do, he has to be able to deliver an accurate ball. If he stays calm, that should be a possibility, but it’s not a given.

Meanwhile, I mentioned the run game earlier. It has regressed badly. The offensive line performance hasn’t been good due to constant penalties and injury issues on the interior. The Titans have been really good at stopping the run, and they have given up just eight TDs to running backs all year. For that reason, it may be tough for Adrian Peterson to get anything going. And Chris Thompson for that matter.

One key in this game will be the Redskins’ ability to keep the pocket clean. If Johnson has time to throw the ball and pick and choose what he’s going to do, that will make it easier for him to move the ball. Brian Orakpo, a former Redskin, has been hurt in recent weeks, and the team should focus on stopping him or his replacement, depending on who is active for the squad.

Right now, the Redskins are not in good shape on offense. There are few units that they would have an advantage against. And this Titans defense is not one, so expect Tennessee to dominate on this side of the ball.
