Montae Nicholson is the latest Redskins player to get in trouble off the field. After punching being arrested for assault and battery, Nicholson was placed on the Reserve/NFI list, ending his season.

Just when things were starting to look up for the Redskins, things took a turn for the worse. Montae Nicholson, the second-year safety out of Michigan State, was arrested on Tuesday morning for assault and battery. And now, he won’t be playing again in 2018.

Nicholson, the team’s top backup at safety and a starter before the arrival of Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, was seen delivering a knockout punch to a man in a video released by TMZ Sports. The video is fairly violent, so just be warned before watching.

As a result of the incident, the Redskins elected to place Nicholson on the Reserve/NFI list, per ESPN’s John Keim. That will effectively end Nicholson’s season, as the rules are the same as the PUP list, and Nicholson will miss the final two games as a result. This was obviously the right move for the Redskins.

Simply put, the video of Nicholson speaks for itself. There was no reason for him to be getting into a fight at 2:00 a.m. on a Tuesday. And the fact that he delivered such a brutal punch didn’t help his case either. The Redskins have already suffered a ton of negative press for claiming Reuben Foster on waivers, so having another player arrested on assault charges certainly isn’t a good look for the franchise.

That said, putting Nicholson on the NFI list is a good start for the organization. They can now spend the rest of the season determining what to do and figure out if they are going to keep Nicholson. Given the contents of the video, it’s uncertain whether or not the team will tolerate it. But, they do currently employ the aforementioned Foster, so it’s well within the realm of possibility for Nicholson to remain on the team. Whether or not he should is another question.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on the Nicholson story as it develops. For now, he won’t be on the field for the rest of the season but expect Nicholson’s name to be in the headlines over the course of the next few weeks as more details and organizational decisions are made.
